  3. Former Chief Justice Rana released after overnight detention, handed over to family

Former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana, who was taken from his Maharajgunj residence by the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office at around 3 a.m. on Sunday, was released later the same day. Superintendent Rameshwar Karki said Rana was "handed over to his relatives," and police said they would arrange security at his home going forward, but they did not provide a formal explanation for either his removal or his release. Officials cited a vague "security threat" without disclosing what it was, its source, or why removal from his home was necessary. It remains unclear whether Rana was ever formally arrested, held in protective custody, or investigated for any offence.

  4. UML objects to 'arbitrary' detention as police agree to guard Rana at his residence

After Rana said he felt more comfortable at home, Senior Superintendent of Police Santosh Khadka said authorities agreed to manage his security at his residence instead of keeping him at the location they had initially moved him to for safety. UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel strongly objected to the police action against Rana, calling it "a serious violation of Nepal's prevailing laws and justice system" that contradicts the constitution, democratic norms and the rule of law. Pokharel warned that "supporting wrongful and arbitrary actions means endorsing authoritarian tendencies" and urged citizens to speak out against such conduct. The objection came even as police had disclosed no formal charges against Rana, who returned home confused about why he had been taken from his bed in the first place.

  3. Narayani River Floods Hit Record High, Nears/Crosses Danger Level at Gandak Barrage

Flood conditions on the Narayani river system worsened rapidly through the day: myRepublica reported flow at the India-border Gandak Barrage reached 273,600 cusecs Saturday morning, just short of the 300,000-cusec warning threshold, while flow at Devghat on the Nepal side was already 348,000 cusecs and rising. Nepali outlets later reported the river's level at Devghat surged past the 7.30-meter alert mark to 8.30 meters and then to a record 11.94 meters — far above the 9-meter danger level and the highest since measurements began in 1963. The Narayani Basin Office warned that continued rainfall in the hills could push levels higher, and authorities relocated residents from Bharatpur wards 1, 2, 16 and 17 as homes there were inundated. Security forces remain on standby along the river for possible rescue operations.

  2. NC Rift Deepens as Deuba Faction Launches Rival Website Ahead of Oct 2-5 Convention

Nepali Congress's internal split has widened after former president Sher Bahadur Deuba's camp launched its own website, "NC 15 General Convention," featuring Deuba and former PM Shashank Koirala and announcing its own convention timeline for Mangsir 21-23 (mid-December), directly at odds with the Thapa-led organizing committee. Party president Gagan Kumar Thapa has rejected any postponement, insisting the official 15th General Convention will proceed October 2-5 (Asoj 16-19) in Kathmandu as per party statute, and dismissed the Deuba faction's parallel activities as "meaningless and unjustified," inviting rivals to challenge him democratically instead. The dispute is compounded by a Supreme Court review petition questioning the legality of the Thapa-led central committee, leaving the party with competing websites, competing calendars, and unresolved legitimacy questions just days before the official convention.

  4. Supreme Court Reopens High-Stakes NC Leadership Dispute Over Deuba-Khadka Review Petition

Nepal's Supreme Court has admitted a review petition filed by former NC president Sher Bahadur Deuba and former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka, reopening the legal battle over party leadership. The dispute traces back to the January 11-12 Special General Convention that elected Gagan Kumar Thapa as president, which the Election Commission validated and a Supreme Court bench upheld on April 17; Deuba and Khadka filed their review petition on July 23, naming Thapa, Vice President Bishwa Prakash Sharma, and the Central Working Committee as respondents, arguing only the Central Working Committee had constitutional authority to convene such a convention. A newly constituted three-justice full bench—excluding judges who approved the review or ruled on the original case—will rehear the matter entirely, with its verdict set to determine the official legitimacy of NC's current leadership just as the party proceeds with its 15th General Convention.

During Chinese President Xi Jinping's three-day visit to the US, the two countries reached an 8-point agreement built around "constructive and strategically stable" ties, including $30 billion in mutual tariff cuts and a new AI dialogue mechanism with a follow-up meeting set for November. The deal also covers cooperation on China's APEC summit and the US-hosted G20, a joint reaffirmation that Iran must not pursue nuclear weapons, and a ban on transit fees for international shipping routes. It builds on earlier trade-council talks held in Kuala Lumpur, and Washington also received two pandas on loan at Atlanta Zoo as a goodwill gesture.

  1. Nepal Cricket Team Tops Group A, Sets Up Sri Lanka Quarterfinal After Beating Afghanistan

Nepal topped Group A at the 20th Asian Games after their final group match against Japan was abandoned due to persistent rain, with Nepal's 150 in a rain-shortened 15-over innings — built on Lokesh Bam's unbeaten 52 off 22 balls and Sundeep Jora's 57 off 32 — standing after Japan could not bat, eliminating Japan and sending Nepal into a quarterfinal against Sri Lanka on September 29. The result capped a strong week that began with Nepal's five-wicket win over Afghanistan, its first victory over the side in 12 years (since a 2014 T20 World Cup win). In that match, Kushal Bhurtel took 4 wickets and Lalit Rajvanshi 3 to restrict Afghanistan to 102, before Sandeep Jora (34) and an unbeaten Rohit Paudel (33) guided Nepal's chase with four overs to spare.
